Barra's mother, Brace, knows to expect great things from her daughter, even when it frightens her. When the infectious Creepervine begins climbing out of the darkness towards the canopy of Cerulean's Great Forest, she isn't surprised when Barra Swiftspur will do whatever she can to save her home from its destructiveness. When the Council snubs the Swiftspur's family legacy of protecting the Umberwood, Barra sets out with her friends, Plicks and Tory, to collect incontrovertible proof that there is something insidious threatening the Arboreal's way of life.
The quest for answers and safety leads this trio of unlikely young heroes through some of the darkest territories known to all of Cerulean. The creatures they encounter along the way are both frightening and intriguing as they attempt to distinguish who is there to help or hinder in their journey. As this adventure amongst friends becomes a matter of life and death, they discover the importance of hope, light, and sacrifice as a means to protect everything they hold dear.
The YA alternate world fantasy of Sunborn Rising comes to life through vivid and beautifully written imagery and magical illustrations that will capture the attention of readers young and old. The same can be said for the intriguing and diverse Arboreals encountered on Cerulean. The young Listlespur, Barra, finds comfort in her closest friends Plicks, the Kolalabat, and Tory, a young Rugosic. The author, Aaron Safronoff, brilliantly captures these creatures and their unique abilities and talents, while making them relatable and imbuing them with realistic human qualities.
A well written story of fantasy and adventure, Sunborn Rising – Beneath the Fall is an inspiring tale of the triumph of good over evil. A community bound by their desire to thrive in the light will discover their strength, inspired by the bravery of Barra and her friends, as they come together to protect their youth from the Creepervine and the destruction that follows it. Sunborn Rising – Beneath the Fall is the best vivid fantasy YA book of the year.
